About

The Maine Seaweed Harvest Guide is your guide to the sustainable harvest and cultivation practices for Maine’s commercially important seaweeds. This guide will provide members of the public (legislators, decision makers, media, etc.) with updated, practical information about Maine’s seaweeds and seaweed sector that is backed by science and decades of on-the-water experience. Starting in 2020, this 5-year collaborative effort builds on the work of the Maine Seaweed Council's Harvester Field Guide (first published in 2002 and updated in 2014) and includes contributions from experts in seaweed harvest, farming, research, management, conservation, and more. By documenting current industry practices and providing baseline information about species harvested in Maine, this guide aims to promote sustainability, transparency, and responsibility in Maine's seaweed sector and invites the public to join in celebrating and stewarding Maine seaweeds.
